What is Photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. This process takes place in the leaves, specifically in tiny structures called chloroplasts which contain a green pigment called chlorophyll.

Key Formula:
Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

Requirements for Photosynthesis

Sunlight — provides the energy to drive the reaction
Carbon dioxide — absorbed from the air through tiny holes called stomata
Water — absorbed from the soil through the roots and transported via the xylem
Chlorophyll — the green pigment that captures light energy

Why is Photosynthesis Important?

It produces food (glucose) for the plant and other organisms
It releases oxygen into the atmosphere which all living things need to breathe
It removes carbon dioxide from the air, helping to keep our atmosphere balanced
